Traditional Celtic Cross Ornament

Legend has it that St. Patrick cleverly combined the ancient symbol of the sun with a Christian cross in order to explain the importance of the cross and God to pagans; hence, The Celtic Cross was born.
While a lovely story, the Celtic Cross appears to be much more ancient than St. Patrick himself!
However, it is fair to say that the Irish monks are certainly responsible for many Celtic crosses still standing across the land today; and for successfully adapting Celtic symbolism to make their religious beliefs more palatable to pagans.
Since the mid nineteenth century, there has been an ever increasing interest in Celtic crosses. An iconic symbol, today the Celtic Cross is intrinsically tied to Irish & Celticheritage.
